Other Information:
The Fernande a fast, comfortable and stable aluminum yacht built especially for Transoceanic regattas in 1979 and has inherited a remarkable turn of speed. Her deck gear and equipment are well up to the demands of sailing within high latitudes, as well as a construction which, in those days, wasn't yet trying to save weight at the expense of strength. She was gutted in by her present owner in 1994, insulated and rebuilt internally to fulfill the requirements of her new carrier. Her French captain Pascal Grinberg, born in France in 1952 has made many Antarctic crossings. He is a professional with 28 years of navigational experience. FERNANDE is 21.5 meters long, has 4 watertight compartments and a large accompaniment of safety equipment. She can carry up to 11 passengers to Antarctica or South Georgia in comfort.
From the FERNANDE brochure:
Little visited South Georgia requires more time due to it's remoteness (1100 nautical miles from Ushuaia) which implies five to six days sailing out, and six to nine days back, due to headwinds and unfavorable currents. It is a pearl which has to be earned! This large mountainous island, over one hundred miles long, is classified as sub-antarctic due to it's position within the belt of cold water, rich with nutrients, which surround the great white continent. It may be less covered with ice than it's neighbor, Antarctica, but it's wildlife and flora, as well as it's remains of historical interest, are a hundred times richer. he land-based whaling industry of the beginning of the century abandoned the place barely more than thirty years ago, leaving everything behind... except whales which they had systematically cleaned out. A trip to South Georgia means walks among colonies of hundreds of t housands of penguins, hikes in mountains, surprise encounters with sea elephants or reindeer around the street-corner of a ghost town, as wee as calm, secluded anchorages set in fantastic scenery, with wrecks of old square-riggers as your only neighbors. It is a rare privilege to go there, and a powerful experience. The expeditions are open to anyone in good health, beginners or confirmed sailors. We offer the boat and our technical ability, but, remember, it is your journey, and your active participation is recommended both above and below deck. Boat and passengers are insured while embarked. We advise you to purchase insurance for time spent on land.
